Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Height

When choosing a crib for your bed make sure it can be adjusted to a comfortable height for you. The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues that included gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example, these products would have to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets or at least the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements weren't practical or effective in reducing number of incidents where infants are trapped between a bedside rocking crib rail and an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers which can be converted to other modes such as play yards and bassinets. Several commenters suggested the CPSC add an alternative provision to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use that would permit them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. This attachment can be permanently fixed or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when it decides on the final rule which is expected to be issued in the month of November 2021.
